Three spoken word pieces by K.OSMOSIS.

The first is K.OSMOSIS as Vyshinsky, the state prosecutor for Stalin's show trials, most notably the Trial of the Twenty-One (which, presumably, this quote or adaptaion is from, given that the character description specifically describes Nikolai Bukharin, an influential Marxist 'theoretician'). Oddly enough, the Youtube site notes the quote from Vyshinsky, while another credits it to Stalin (which, as far as I can tell, is incorrect).

The recording/video has also seemed to gain a sort of unintentional meaning and significance as it was mentioned on the 'official' SPK website that K.OSMOSIS had suffered a complete psychotic breakdown and was being kept at a local asylum (whether or not he still resides there is unknown, in addition to the progress of the rumored forthcoming album).

Eagerly awaiting the new SPK release "SIM PIN KEY".

Fear Factory's New Album Is Not Too Bad

Title really explains everything. Not ground-breaking, but not awful either: a 'back-to-basics' approach. The only problem is that they already had a 'back-to-basics' album in 'Archetype'. 'Mechanize' is good, but beyond the traditional elements which made Fear Factory (usually) a reliable listen, there is not much going for it. Hoglan's drumming is impressive, Burton's vocal delivery is rather decent, and Dino...well, the riffs sound basically like variations of riffs from most of the previous albums (not that it is entirely his fault, of course).

One important element that seems to have returned is the political/philosophical element in the linear notes by Burton C. Bell, which had been missing from the previous three albums (before Digimortal's release, they had put some extensive 'song description' passages on their website, but for some reason they did not survive to the final album, which is unfortunate, since the text described the various concepts, such as 'the ultra rich gaining immortality', etc).

I guess I should be glad that a new Fear Factory album even exists, and that it's much better than Transgression and Digimortal.

This is a tragedy.

As mentioned by noted-singer Antony in a Brainwashed article during the talks, this issue did not receive significant coverage due to highly lucrative lobbying and special interests. There are many different news sources, normally highly diverse in tone/opinion, but unified in the sense that Copenhagen was a monumental failure. Even several sites which claim that Copenhagen was a success tend to note that it was because it raised public awareness of the issue, rather than ratifying meaningful changes. But all the 'public awareness' in the world will do absolutely no good, if the countries of the world continue to play Russian roulette with the planet in order to continue their country's economic/social development.

Fear Factory = Tools

Literally. It's hard to argue that you and your band are not 'tools' when you include your album in an actual toolbox, containing "...the Digipak CD, carpenter pencil, hammer, screwdriver, calliper, folding rule, measuring tape, patch (12 x 5cm), poster DIN A2 (folded to A4), certificate with serial number and sticker DIN A5!". Yawn.

I still have a great amount of respect for Fear Factory's historical impact, and, as their Wikipedia page suggests, they were a 'stepping stone' band for me as well, which prompted me to gradually discover more diverse/extreme/unusual/lesser-known bands. But my interest, much in the same vein as Massive Attack and Strapping Young Lad, has slowly lessened over the years and is now next-to-nonexistent. But while Massive Attack mainly dropped the ball due to their incredibly long album creation process (coupled with internal pressures and the general music climate dramatically) and Strapping Young Lad gradually watering down their musical craft until they released the atrocious The New Black (and subsequently, albeit arguably wisely, called it a day), I still am somewhat amazed at how far Fear Factory has fallen since Demanufacture/Obsolete (although I am also an 'old school' fan who prefers 'Soul Of A New Machine' and 'Concrete' somewhat).

Fear Factory has been promising a 'back-to-basics' album since Archetype...perhaps with 'Mechanize' they will finally deliver. Archetype, while technically solid, was nothing incredibly special ("Obsolete Part II", perhaps, with less epic-songwriting) and 'Transgression', not only having an album name which almost begs one to insult it, also was a clear attempt to get more mainstream audiences (a lame U2 cover, and a well-meaning, but awkward Killing Joke cover?). Granted, the 'more-metal' songs on Transgression were actually pretty good (even 'Supernova' wasn't too bad).

Of course, many of these opinions and my general acceptance of much of the band's output stems from the fact that I really detest the "Digimortal" release. I will not go as far as to say I hate it or that it sucks, but it comes really close, sadly. Especially since I remember Burton C. Bell's extensive pre-release linear notes regarding the concepts of 'Digimortal' that strangely never seemed to make it into the album itself. Not that they would have necessarily made the album's songwriting any stronger, but it would lend strength to arguments against the assertion that Fear Factory simply re-recorded Obsolete with slightly weaker songs, no Gary Numan, and a rapper on one song.

Perhaps my fears are unjustified, and the album will turn out to be really good (I have been told it's leaked already, but I'm not going to bother to check it out until it's actually released). The "Powershifter" single seemed enjoyable (albeit somewhat utilitarian and functional). But what Fear Factory really needs to do is use that toolbox of theirs to fix up their dysfunctional relationships, not only amongst the current and (arguably) former band members (who have collectively slung more mud at each other than Lyndon B. Johnson and Elizabeth Dole combined), but with their fans as well (who apparently have nothing better to do with their lives besides commenting on how thin Burton C. Bell is).

I will dispense with the formalities taken in previous versions of this article to outline the basic premise of this article: the music label Some Bizzare is shit (although it is important to note that the bands on the label are NOT shit). The man behind, Stevø Pearce, is also shit. While historically known as being the manager of Soft Cell in the early Eighties, he also has a history of taking advantage of several bands signed to his label by re-releasing their back catalogs without paying royalties. The most notable of these bands include Einstürzende Neubauten and Coil, although that it is highly probable that other bands on the roster, including recent signings, are either not receiving money and/or are being underpaid or under-promoted.

For a general overview regarding the early era of Some Bizzare, here is a somewhat dated forum thread which includes several interesting quotes regarding Coil and Jhonn Balance's reactions regarding the "Scatology" and "Horse Rotorvator" re-issues, as well as second-hand accounts regarding Einstürzende Neubauten, Marc Almond, Cabaret Voltaire, and other bands dealings with the label.

The initial idea for this article began with a discussion with fellow musician The Death Sound, when I learned that Some Bizzare was ripping off many of its signed bands, specifically the industrial-electronica group GL1TCHG0R3. Several days later, I discovered this article on the blog of Rev. Spook (one half of GL1TCHG0R3), which outlines the reasons why they left the label. Some of the reasons stated in his blog entry included an appalling lack of promotion, Stevo's high level of disdain for many of the acts he has signed (past and present), demeaning Genesis P-Orridge behind her back, repeatedly dodging issues that GL1TCHG0R3 needed to have resolved, and refusing to answer questions when they attempted to determine what exactly was going on at any given point.

Later, I was directed to this blog entry written by Dr. Tedley (the other half of GL1TCHG0R3). This article goes into far greater detail, noting Stevo's frequent paranoid and maniac rants and tirades against not only many current Some Bizzare musicians, but also recounting previous animosities from his formerly signed bands. To say that Dr. Tedley's article is eye-opening is an understatement; if you are the very least mildly interested in any of the previously discussed topics mentioned above, I highly encourage you to go check it out. If this does not cement your opinion of Some Bizzare and/or Stevo Pearce, than I suspect nothing will.

In case you need several more second opinions, here is a (re-directed) article featuring Marc Almond's thoughts about the Some Bizzare re-issues of his albums, and a Brainwashed.com article (written by Jon Whitney) which, in addition to serving as a great review of Psychic TV's "Force Thee Hand of Chance", also includes these interesting quotes:

"It angers me that Some Bizzare Stevø has treated one of the best releases of the 1980s with such utter negligence, issuing versions like this with embarrassing mistakes on tracklisting, indexing errors, chintzy packaging, and dreadful artwork recreation. I encourage nobody to buy this shitty reissue and I hereby challenge Stevø to recall these copies at once and put out a fucking proper release of this classic once and for all."

"I call shenanigans on you, Stevø, as you've delivered the same version you did 10 years ago (but with unrelated nonsense). Recall this and I'll be delighted to assist in a proper release of it myself. This album deserves far better than you have delivered."

Finally, here is my personal response, re-directed from my Myspace account. This was in response to Stevo's "response" (?) regarding this very article. With a small dose of encouragement, it became rather comedic and humorous, in addition to being rather strange and surreal (in case you are wondering, he was attempting to discover my real name and mailing address, not knowing that the project he was contacting was MY own noise side-project).

It must be mentioned at this point that several people have claimed that Stevo Pearce is, in reality, basically a decent person who "greatly loves music", there are many people out there who will that "his character flaws have proved to be a great detriment to many of the artists he's worked with over the years". Read this article. Awareness, research, and increased visibility won't do shit if we are already screwed. I'm not worried about an asteroid collision, but everyone should be scared of the possible extinction of the bee species. Is the 'bee research' too late? Sure, we may now know how much 'hard work' it takes to put food on our plate, but shouldn't almost all effort go into saving/increasing bee populations, or determining what is causing the extremely rapid decline, or how they can lessen/prevent identifiable factors in their decline?

MST3K Youtube Feature

The first video here is a 're-purposed movie trailer', featuring classic moments from the famous MST3K "Manos : The Hands Of Fate" video. It does a pretty good job in making this shitty movie worth watching. :) Plus, the background music also kicks ass too (if anyone knows what band/song is used in the trailer, please tell me. It sounds familiar to me, and yet I can't seem to think of the band that performed it).

The second video here is a (somewhat corny) top ten list of MST3K quotes.
My personal favorites are "Normal View!", "I take care of the place while the master is away", "Your weapons have no effect on me!", and "WATCH OUT FOR SNAKES!!!".

Inswarm : Detach Imminent!

First is the music video "Detach" (from 2006) from the band Still Life Decay, featuring Burton C. Bell with additional vocals. If that wasn't cool enough, he also features in the video as a mad scientist!!! Classic.

The second video is a live video from the band Inswarm (which was formerly Still Life Decay, but with different members and the same vocalist).

Both awesome, guilty pleasures. :D

No, not the doom band of Important Records fame (although they are a decent band), but the fact that the oceans are not faring well, and are expected to get much more. Read more here in this long article (hint: much of the current problems stem from European and East Asian fishing activities, trawling, pollution, etc).
Obviously not pleasant reading (especially when the article talks about how seals are blamed for environmental damage, when in reality it is continual human-caused ecosystem disruption), but it's worth reading.
